Hello world, hello Mosaic

What if visual building in WordPress wasn’t a tradeoff? Not a compromise. Not a gimmick. Just a faster way to build real websites, with structured classes, reusable components, and scalable design. We didn’t want to replace WordPress. We wanted to unlock its full potential.

That idea became something bigger than we expected. And it reminded me, it’s been over a decade since I last launched something new.

I’m Daniel, you might know me from Smart Slider or Nextend Social Login. Over the years, those tools taught us a lot, about development, support, and building products that scale. Mosaic is the third. Built on everything we’ve learned.

It didn’t happen overnight. It took four years of building, breaking, and rebuilding to get here.

Four years of collecting countless lessons and rewriting more parts of the system than we’d care to admit. We started building it with a clear vision, but like all good things, the road wasn’t exactly smooth.

Some subsystems are already in their third or fourth iteration, rewritten and refined until they met our standards. We focused on building powerful systems that don’t overwhelm, and ensuring that every feature not only exists, but also feels right to use.

Meet Mosaic

Imagine the power of WordPress as your content engine, the flexibility of Webflow for building stunning layouts, and the creative freedom of Figma managing your design system. Now bring it all together in a single, unified workflow. But we didn’t stop at combining those tools, we rethought them, pushing each concept beyond its limits.

Mosaic is a theme builder, a visual editor, and a design system, all in one tool. But unlike traditional solutions, it doesn’t lock you into rigid templates or hide the real structure behind endless layers of abstraction.

Because for too long, WordPress builders have had to settle for clunky tools and frustrating workarounds. Mosaic brings true web building closer to you, where you work with structure, logic, reusable components, and design consistency.

Mosaic editor brings visual editing and real web foundations.

You’re not just clicking things into place, you’re learning to think in clean design systems and scalable architecture, all while staying connected to the fundamentals of the web: HTML and CSS. You feel each decision, every tradeoff, and the way complexity compounds. It works with you, not against you.

Less time wasted on repetitive busywork, more time left for real creativity. The result? Websites that are faster, cleaner, and built to last, with design you’ll still love a year from now. And for once, you won’t need a developer to fix it… or a therapist.

This is how Mosaic was made to change how we think about building a WordPress website.

The problem

You’ve got the vision. You’ve got the content. But everything between idea and execution starts falling apart, fast.

You install a theme. Most are stuck in the past. They come with mediocre designs and clunky UX patterns. Instead of unleashing your creativity, you’re stuck fixing their outdated look just to get started on your content.

You try Gutenberg. Marketed as modern, but built for minimalists, not in a good way. It’s missing the advanced tools and workflows serious creators rely on. You don’t hit creative flow. You hit a wall.

The hidden problems of WordPress theme and plugin chaos.

Then comes the cost. A never-ending money pit. First you pay for a theme, then for a bunch of plugins to patch the theme’s weaknesses, then even more plugins to fix the conflicts. Every new feature eats up both time and budget, not to mention your sanity.

You open a builder. It promises flexibility, but instead, you’re learning a tool that barely speaks the language of the web. Want to tweak the design freely? Too bad, rigid templates have other plans.

There’s no consistency. No shared logic. No design system. Each page feels like it was built by a different person, and mobile just magnifies the mess.

You try to take control with custom CSS, only to find it locked away, of course. And when you finally slip in those CSS fixes, the site groans under bloated code. Sure, it might look fine on the surface, but performance suffers with every workaround you bolt on.

Scalability? A joke. One small change unravels everything. What should be a five-minute edit becomes a multi-hour rebuild. You start thinking twice before you touch anything at all.

Eventually, maintenance stops. Most sites stay frozen in time after launch. Why? Because fixing one thing breaks two others.

And when something really breaks? Good luck. Documentation is outdated. Support is slow or missing entirely. You’re left piecing together solutions from half-baked forum posts. If you’re lucky… Sound familiar?

That’s exactly why we created Mosaic, to break this cycle and give you the control, consistency, and freedom you’ve been missing.

Our solution

Mosaic isn’t just a plugin, it’s your theme, your builder, and your design system, all working as one. It doesn’t run on top of existing themes. You create your own. Why? Because real consistency, performance, and freedom only happen when everything speaks the same language.

Build your theme from scratch in Mosaic with guided steps that handle the hard parts for you.

We rethought the entire process of building websites, structure, design, and styling, and brought them together into one seamless toolkit. It’s a complete ecosystem where every part is made to work in harmony.

Theme builder

Forget what you know about page builders. Mosaic flips the model, instead of adding it to a theme, you build the theme itself. With a guided setup wizard and a massive library of pages, kits, blocks, and patterns, all ready to mix, match, and make your own.

Themes: Mosaic launches with four starter themes:

  • Empty and Blank — clean foundations for building your vision from scratch.
  • Gibraltar and Monolith — massive multipurpose design systems. More framework than theme, packed with examples, layouts, and page kits built to scale.

Each Mosaic theme is a full design system, not just random starter pages. One theme can include over 400 unique blocks and more than 50 fully designed pages, all built to work together. And when we say “unique,” we don’t mean we aligned the text left instead of right. You could rebuild your entire site ten times over, and never repeat yourself once.

Three starting points, endless possibilities – preview of Blank, Gibraltar, and Monolith themes.

Masters: At the core is Mosaic’s master-template architecture, a flexible inheritance system that supports one or even multiple masters. You define shared elements like headers, footers, and layouts once, and every template inherits from them automatically. Update the logo in your master? It changes across your entire site.

Templates: Ever tried to change a layout and found yourself deep in PHP just to target the right page type? Mosaic skips the code. Need control over layout logic? That’s where templates come in. Assign them by post type, category, archive, or even create conditions. Add dynamic variables, control visibility conditions, and build layouts that adapt, without writing a single line of PHP.

View, manage, and create templates – all from one powerful dashboard.

Loops: And when it comes to dynamic layouts, Mosaic gives you a custom loop builder to create visual, flexible, and reusable lists, for blog posts, testimonials, team members, and more. With full control over structure, filters, and logic.

Mosaic isn’t just a theme builder. It’s a structural engine, built to make your site smarter, faster, and ready to scale.

Visual editor

What if your editor worked like the web actually works? This is where Mosaic stops following the rules and starts rewriting them.

Built on HTML: With the editor, we went back to the roots, to how the web actually works. Elements are exactly what they appear to be. An image is an image. A div is a div. An image wrapped in a div isn’t a new “image box” element for us. The result? Clean, inspectable HTML. That looks like a website, not a crime scene.

Fully native: Because the editor is fully native, it’s lightning-fast. You can build and style in real-time, with live preview and instant feedback. It even has a built-in backup system you’ll be glad exists, even if you never need it. Work on multiple pages at once, or collaborate with teammates editing the same one. That’s all possible thanks to Mosaic’s powerful synchronization system.

Class system: Element classes let you build a solid foundation, a clear, semantic hierarchy that gives your design structure. Utility classes let you move fast, adding styles wherever needed. And because Mosaic supports both in harmony, you get the best of both worlds: freedom where you want it, structure where you need it.

A button shows how three element classes and one utility class combine for clean, consistent styling.

Full CSS access: Every CSS property is at your fingertips. No restrictions. No abstractions. No high-level-only interface. Type it, see it, tweak it live. There’s nothing between you and your styles.

Components: Turn anything into a reusable component, from single elements to complex layouts. Drop it anywhere. Keep it synced. Stay consistent. Need different content? Override content or styles per instance. Want a unique variation? Add or remove elements without breaking the original.

Interactions: Mosaic’s animation engine lets you create everything from subtle transitions to bold, immersive effects, visually. Add scroll animations. Hover states. Reactions to mouse movement and clicks. Trigger once-only transitions or persistent animated behaviors. From “fade-in” to “wow, how did they build that?”, it’s all in here. All of it is fully native. No plugins. No hacks. No slowdown.

Build your theme from scratch in Mosaic with guided steps that handle the hard parts for you.

I’m excited about what Mosaic already is in beta. But I’m even more excited about what Mosaic will become. And we’re building it together because this is a community-driven project. So join us and shape what’s next.

Design system

Your site’s entire visual language, organized, connected, and under your control. A design system removes the guesswork, speeds you up, and keeps everything consistent, from the smallest button to the most complex layout.

Style guide: Every theme includes a dedicated style guide, where you can review and edit your project’s entire design language from one place. Update a font, change a color, tweak spacing, and those updates ripple through your whole site instantly.

The Style Guide in action – accent color selected, global changes just a click away.

Style variables: Define your design logic with reusable values. Assign variables for accent colors, font families, spacing scales, border widths, anything you need. You can group variables into Collections, and from there, define Skins and Modes, so your site can automatically adapt to different contexts.

Gutenberg style guide: Even core WordPress blocks get full design treatment. With Mosaic, you can style Gutenberg elements directly within your system, keeping everything consistent, and truly integrated.

Design library: Every theme includes a curated library of page kits, pages, blocks, and parts, all built with your styles and variables. Just plug-and-play design that feels like your own.

A full library of ready-made blocks, organized by category and built to match your theme.

This is how you shape the web, piece by piece. From style variables to class structures, from components to context-aware theming, Mosaic’s design engine was built to scale. Not just in page count, but in consistency, structure, and creativity. You don’t just design faster. You don’t just build pages. You build website that looks good, feels right, and just works.

That one more thing

We built Mosaic to break limitations, so we weren’t about to add new ones. Because the best way to shape the web… is to open it up. Let that sink in.

Get it, right? No trial. No expiry. No crippled features. Just Mosaic. For free.

And if you ever need more, like advanced features, interactions, more templates, pages, or extra power, we’ve got a Pro version waiting for you. But right now? You’ve already got everything you need to build something great.
