Clipped text

Clipped text

This tutorial shows how to fill text with an image instead of a flat color, then lock that image in place as the page scrolls.

Difficulty:
Beginner
Time:
~5 min

This image filled text WordPress technique clips a background image straight into the letters themselves, instead of a plain colored heading. It’s a small effect, but it makes a CTA or heading feel a lot more considered than a default text color.

Clip an image into text

Add a background image to the text

Select the text you want to fill, then add a background image to it, the same way you would for a section.

Clip the image to the text

Set Background clip to Text. The image will seem to disappear at this point, that’s expected.

Make the text transparent

Set the text color to transparent so the background image shows through the letters instead of hiding behind them.

Add the scroll effect

Turn on Fixed image

Back in the background settings, turn on Fixed image so the image stays locked inside the text while the page scrolls.

Result

The text now shows an image through its letters instead of a flat color, with the image staying still as the page scrolls past it for a subtle bit of extra depth.
